I’ve been recruiting for just over 20 years, in good times and bad. Mainly in the ERP space, primarily contract recruitment.
Never have I seen so many challenges one on top of another.
Firstly Brexit and repercussions of that, once it became clear it was going to happen and there was no reason for or legal case for a review and second referendum. Perhaps, Nigel Farage and Boris would finally get the Brexit they had wanted all along.
Secondly, and perhaps inevitably following the Brexit announcement and the change in conservative leadership, the General Election. At last perhaps some clarity and clear direction.
In the Shadows all this time, IR35, and the changes to Ltd companies, Taxes at source and the General repercussions to the Contractor market. Nothing new, IR35 has been around for many years, just interpretation is changing.
Then finally, something none of us could foresee, the decimating effects of COVID-19, globally, a Pandemic, mass unemployment, shocking loss of life, and the threat of a Global Recession.
So how are these cumulative issues changing the market place, for the global workforce and effecting recruiting for skilled labour ?
People will now expect freedom of movement and flexible work hours. Few will want to revert to standard work patterns and travel.
Working from home is expected to be more common place, taking exercise and breaks during the daily working pattern, and balancing work and play will be more the norm.
The contract market will change now that benefits and tax rules are changing. People are usually either in the contract camp, freedom of movement, not tied to one business, charging a higher rate for rarer skills, or Permanent mindset, buying into the culture of a business, more heavily interested in a benefits package, and expecting to work for one company for many years. The lines are blurring, contracts are fewer, or, at a lower rates than before.
The world for the global workforce is changing, busier times will be upon us soon , the economy will bounce back, people will chose where and how they wish to work. Whichever way, there will be busy times ahead, when the economy starts to grow again, there will be a need for skilled IT labour, be it Contract or Permanent.
